Take Me Away is the first track on the EP, and probably one of my favorites of the record.
This song is a collision of sorts, both lyrically and sonically. I wanted to try to capture the tension that exists between desiring God to make some serious changes in our lives (intentions) and the pride that tells us all we’re fine on our own. I think this is the story of all of human history.
The turn of the song comes after the lyric:
It’s a new day
The old has passed away
And I won’t be the same
Things are different at that point, much like our lives as a new creation. I think we captured that well with the music.
The bridge begins with me talking to myself about what I should already know by now as the truth of God, and yet I still revert back to pride or temporary things to satisfy. It’s followed up the also speaking what the truth is – that I’m not a slave to sin because of the grace and sacrifice of Jesus.
It all leads up to the chorus at the very end, which is an asking of God to do whatever it takes to make me more like him:
So take these notions of self-destruction
and take them away
or take me away from them
and leave me to be here with you
Lord I don’t care how you do it
Just take me away from here

Gabe Scott appears on this song with some dobro goodness. I can’t believe he played on my songs…really have admired all of his playing with Andrew Peterson, Bebo Norman, and some with Shane & Shane. The man has a gift.
More song stories to come this week, as well as some other announcements.

You were not at Remuda when I was there in ’05, but just from reading some of your blogs I know I would have enjoyed all you have to offer. The words to the song are beautiful, is it on mainstream radio yet to be released?
Blessings and continue the good work. I miss worship at Remuda..it was an amazing experience.
Thanks for the comment and kinds words, Di!
Unfortunately, as an independent artist, it would take a lot for any of the songs to make it to any sort of mainstream radio….not that I’m not open to it or anything.
Blessings to you as well!
I can’t wait to hear the songs, Josh! It’s been exciting to read about your journey! God has big plans for you!!!
